Sri Lanka , an island in the Indian Ocean is located to the south of the Indian subcontinent, with a total land area of 65,610 sq. km and a population of 18 million. The relief features of the island consist of tropical beaches and a mountainous mass somewhat south of the center, with height exceeding 2,500m, surrounded by broad plains.

In the low lands the climate is typically tropical with an average temperature of 27°C in Colombo . In the higher elevations it can be quite cool with temperatures going down to 16°C.

The south-west monsoon brings rain mainly from May to July to the western, southern & central regions of the island, while the north-east monsoon rains occur in the northern & eastern regions in December & January.

Sri Lanka is mainly an Agricultural country where the main crop cultivated is rice. Tea, rubber & coconut are the other three major export agricultural crops. Spices, fruits & vegetables native to both tropical & temperate regions, grow well in Sri Lanka
